Melaka cancels New Year's Eve celebration

MELAKA: The state-level New Year's Eve celebration to usher in 2023, scheduled on Dec 31 at Taman Seribu Bunga, has been cancelled, said State Tourism, Heritage and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis.

He said the decision was made after taking into account the current floods in several states.

"During this situation, I feel that it is inappropriate for us to hold the New Year's Eve celebration and this is also in line with the federal government's decision to cancel the event," he said in a press conference on the organising of the Melaka Flower Festival 2022 at Taman Seribu Bunga here today.

Jailani said the state government would replace the celebration with religious events like 'doa selamat' to pray for the safety of Malaysians, especially those in the east coast states.

He added that Melaka was also planning to send aid through volunteering to help ease the burden and hardship of flood victims in the affected states. --Bernama
