Trap marksman Ong on course for second Asian Games appearance

KUALA LUMPUR: Trap shooter Ong Chee Kheng was all smiles after bagging two gold and two silver at the Thailand Open and South East Asia Championships (SEASA), which were held simultaneously in Thailand recently.

Ong claimed his first gold in Bangkok after firing a commendable 112 during the Thai Open individual category qualifying round. Thai duo Kasem Vangtal (111) and Savate Sresthaporn (110) settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

The Sarawakian claimed his second gold during the SEASA individual final, in which he shot 39. Vietnam's Nguyen Hoang Deip (37) and Choo Choon Seng of Singapore (26) bagged the silver and bronze, respectively.

Ong then teamed up with fellow Malaysian Chen Seong Fook and Great Britain's James Dedman to claim silver in the Thai Open team category with a combined score of 324.

Chen, Ong and Eng Wei Jin (all Malaysians) also claimed silver in the SEASA team event on 313.

Ong, who turned 40 in September, was visibly delighted with his performance.

"Based on my score of 112 in the qualifying I have qualified for my second Asian Games in Hangzhou next year," said Ong, who finished fifth in the Hanoi SEA Games.

"This is the second time I have achieved a score of 112 this year. The first time was during the Hanoi SEA Games in May."

Ong made his maiden Asian Games appearance during the 2010 Guangzhou edition.
