Pas denies Tok Mat's claims the party wants to 'kill Umno'

KOTA BARU: Pas today dismissed claims by Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan that Pas "wants to kill" Umno in politics.

Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said Umno, on the other hand, was determined in getting rid of Pas, including an attempt to ban the party once.

"As a party that upholds Islam as its principle, Pas is always determined and has approached Umno in an effort to unite Muslims and Malays who are the majority group in the country," he said in a statement today.

He said efforts to unite the ummah had been initiated across people of various races and religions to create a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere through democratic channels based on the rule of law.

"Therefore, as a mainstream party, Pas will continue with its 'open concept' and is willing to hold meetings, discussions and negotiations with any party by focusing on points of commonality and bridging differences for the sake of the people, as well as for the country," said the Kota Baru MP.

Takiyuddin said Pas was confident that only with the unity of all political parties, formed on the basis of sincerity and good intentions, would it guarantee the formation of a government that was fair and equitable to people of various races, religions and cultures.

In the meantime, he said Pas would always uphold mature and prosperous practices and approaches in the country's politics.

"Pas prays that reckless, provocative and unfounded attitudes for whatever reason and purposes will not undermine and damage the existing wellbeing and good relations in our society," he added.
