Putatan Umno chief quits Sabah govt post to support party's decision

KOTA KINABALU: The Putatan Umno division chief has resigned as a leader at the Central Community Development Unit (UPPM) under Sabah Chief Minister's Department.

Jeffery Nor Mohamed, 53, who tendered his resignation letter today, said the decision was on a personal account and not based on any instruction from the state Umno leadership.

"As the reasons stated in the letter, I made the decision after the special state Umno meeting on Jan 6, whereby the majority of the party members withdrew support from the state government.

"As a party member, whereby my name has been proposed to hold this position, I submit to the collective decision of the party (to withdraw support for the current administration). Therefore, I also withdraw from holding this position.

"The decision to quit the job is personal and there was no directive from the state leadership to resign from the position. But I think this is for the best," he said, adding that he was also present during the state Umno meeting on Jan 6.

Jeffery also extended his gratitude to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and the election machinery in Putatan.

When asked whether there were other BN/Umno leaders who would follow suit, he said that there was no news yet.

There are five community development leaders (PPM) leaders in the headquarters, and one each in the 73 constituencies in the state, with 24 of them being political appointees from BN-Umno.

At press time, the Sabah government had yet to decide on whether the four Umno assistant ministers will be retained in the cabinet.

Last weekend, Hajiji had said he would consider several aspects before deciding on their fate.

During the swearing-in of new cabinet ministers on Monday, three Umno assemblymen were dropped from the cabinet line-up. They are Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, his deputy, Datuk Yakub Khan, and secretary Datuk Jafry Ariffin, who were among 13 assemblymen who plotted against Hajiji's administration.

The remaining Umno assistant ministers in the cabinet are Tanjung Batu's Datuk Andi Muhamad Suryady Bandy (Youth and Sports); Bengkoka's Datuk Harun Durabi (Rural Development); Sungai Sibuga's Datuk Mohd Hamsan Awg Supain (Local Government and Housing) and Pantai Manis' Mohd Tamin Zainal (Industrial Development).
