Tze Yong to focus on building physical strength

KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann has defended the national body's decision not to include Ng Tze Yong in the squad for the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship in Dubai (Feb 14-19).

Choong Hann said the national body have bigger plans for Tze Yong and are focusing on preparing him from a physical aspect. Efforts to strengthen Tze Yong physically are currently in the final stages.

"It was planned long ago that Tze Yong will not compete in the competitions before the Olympic qualifiers begin in May," said Choong Hann.

"He is currently undergoing a long-term programme and is now in the final block of training.

"At the moment he is lacking behind the top-10 players and we are looking to close the gap. To do that we need to improve his physique.

"We don't want to neglect his physical side and risk injuries while chasing our targets. We don't want injuries to affect his chances of collecting qualifying points for the Olympics."

Choong Hann disclosed that they are looking to have Tze Yong compete in at least 18 tournaments this season.
