Dewan Rakyat rejects PN emergency motion to discuss PM Saudi trip

KUALA LUMPUR: The emergency motion to adjourn the Lower House sitting to discuss the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Saudi was rejected.

Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor said it was the decision by the Parliament led by the Leader of the House who is also the Prime Minister to reject the emergency motion by Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Perikatan Nasional-Machang).

"We must be aware that the Leader of the House, who is the prime minister, is indisputable.

"The Orders of the Day have been set under the ruling of the Speaker and Leader of the House.

"Government affairs are always a priority. That is clear YB, refer to the Standing Order 18;19 and 17," he told the Lower House today.

Ramli was responding to Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru) who interjected and emphasised the need to discuss issues that were within the public's interest.

Takiyuddin queried the Deputy Speaker on the alternative method to raise the official visit to Saudi since the opposition's emergency motion had been rejected and the question through the Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQT) was ignored.

"What are the channels we have for the people? You tell us,where else? You are the honoured man; learned person, you guide us," he said.

Ramli then used other parliamentary practices such as New Zealand, Singapore and Britain as examples in response to Takiyuddin.

"We look at the rules, we look at the scenario and the Westminster system.

"I read in the news about the New Zealand and Singapore parliament, that at the end of the day the decision lies with the House.

"You (Takiyuddin) were a former minister. Don't drag this on, there are still matters to discuss," he said.

Earlier, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal raised his emergency motion to the Lower House seeking explanation and said his question submitted for PMQT was rejected.

Ramli said any lawmakers who were not satisfied could file another motion to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker's office which would then be decided later.

The Deputy Speaker also reminded the MPs to behave as the public have referred to the August House as a "zoo."

Yesterday, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal submitted motions to adjourn the Dewan Rakyat sitting seeking explanation for Anwar's official visit to Saudi Arabia.

He added the explanation was necessary as it seemed Anwar was given a "cold reception" in Saudi Arabia as he failed to get an audience with King Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud or Crown Prince Mohammed Salman Al-Saud during the official visit.

Anwar began his visit to the kingdom on Wednesday where he was accompanied by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the trip was successful despite Anwar not having an audience with King Salman.
