Elections for Kota Kinabalu, Tanah Merah Umno divisions postponed, says Shahrir

KUALA LUMPUR : Umno's election committee has postponed the election at two party divisions until after the fasting month.

The committee's chairman, Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad, said the election for the Kota Kinabalu and Tanah Merah Umno divisions will be held after Ramadan, which is expected to be from March 23 to April 21.

He said the election at the two divisions will also be handled by their respective state liaison committees.

"The election at the Kota Kinabalu and Tanah Merah Umno divisions have been postponed. This involves the election for posts at their respective divisional wings and division leadership.

"They will instead have their delegates meetings handled by their respective state liaison committees. This means that both divisions will not be involved in the national-level party election.

"They will hold their delegates meetings after Ramadan. This was decided based on the level of protests (we received ) and due to the situation which warranted a need for the divisional delegates conferences to be postponed," said Shahrir, who was quoted by the Umno Online portal.

In June 2022, the party had suspended the Tanah Merah Umno division after a majority of its leaders joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia .

The Umno election began with the polls at its branch-level, including for the Wanita, Youth and Puteri Umno wings' branches from Feb 1 to 26.

The election for the divisional Wanita, Youth and Puteri Umno posts, and national-level Wanita, Youth and Puteri Umno executive councils will be held tomorrow (March 11).

The party election culminates on March 18 with the polls for its top posts, including divisional committees and supreme council.

Meanwhile, Shahrir reminded candidates to adhere to regulations stipulated under the party election code of conduct. He said adhering to such codes would help improve Umno's image and produce a line-up of respectable leaders.

He compared such codes of conduct to regulations imposed by the Election Commission during any general election and state election.

"I must remind the candidates who have offered themselves for posts at wings, divisions or national-level party to understand the Umno code (of conduct). It is not something extraordinary, and it is similar to the restrictions and prohibitions imposed during any election under the EC."

Shahrir said even with technological advances in methods of campaigning in the party election, regulations must be adhered to.

"(Umno) has allowed for certain leniencies similar to those given by the EC. These include the usage of social media and the Internet when offering and introducing oneself as a candidate to delegates. So, this should not prohibit us from producing leaders with a good image."
