MPs have Parliamentary immunity when speaking in Dewan - Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: All members of parliament have immunity while speaking in the Dewan Rakyat.

In response to the threat issued to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong on the issue of eggs imported from India, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul reiterated that no action could be taken against an MP when speaking in the August House as long as it doesn't contradict with the Sedition Act.

"I have already given my answers when Wee wrote to me that the lawyer (of J&E Tech Advance Sdn Bhd) is suing him and I told him that it cannot be done.

"Anything that was said by an MP cannot be sued as long as it doesn't contradict the Sedition Act and does not insult the King.

"Hence, if the lawyer doesn't understand, he has to re-read the Constitution," he said when met by reporters after the launch of the Localising SDGs and Local Issues book in Parliament today.

He added that it was not necessary to call for a further investigation pertaining to the matter.

"No need to investigate, just read the Constitution."

In the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Wee (Barisan Nasional-Ayer Hitam) spoke out against a threat levelled at him following his statement on the import of eggs from India made last month.

He said he had received a call from an individual named Deepak who claimed that the company, J&E Advance Tech, had discussed with the Prime Minister's Office for the case to be settled out of court.

The caller also told Wee to retract his statement on the issue.

In a statement yesterday evening, Deepak denied ever contacting Wee, and claimed that he did not possess the latter's phone number.

He also said he would be contacting his lawyers to take legal action against Wee's "lies".
