Stop-work order for Johor plantation without EIA approval

KUALA LUMPUR: A stop-work order has been issued to a company that allegedly opened a plantation in Endau, Johor, without an approved Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.

In a written reply to a question by Lee Chean Chung (Pakatan Harapan-Petaling Jaya), Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said his ministry, through the Department of Environment, issued the stop-work order under Section 34AA of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 to halt any land clearing and plantation-related activities, pending an investigation.

"Based on investigations, Syarikat AA Sawit Sdn Bhd was found to have violated the act by commencing development of a plantation with EIA approval.

"Following this, the Department of Environment opened an investigation under Section 34A(6)."

He said the company was ordered to carry out remedial work to control erosion and siltation and prevent pollution of the environment and nearby rivers.
