Grilled cencaru stall a big hit during Ramadan

GUA MUSANG: A grilled fish stall selling cencaru (torpedo scad) for only RM1 to RM1.50 each has been drawing in hordes of customers daily.

The stall, run by two brothers, has been able to sell up to 2,000 grilled fish every day during the Ramadan month due to its affordable prices.

Zuhairi Hashim, 33, one of the brothers, buys up to 200kg of fresh cencaru daily from Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh, and is assisted by his siblings and other family members in cleaning and marinating the fish.

"We prepare the spices together at night and will start grilling the fish in the morning after getting the fish from our supplier.

"The preparation of the spices takes about four to five hours daily," he told reporters when met at his stall in Bandar Utama here.

His brother, Ahmad Aiman, 24, said they start selling grilled fish from 3pm to 7pm, and they also offer grilled terubuk (also known as toli shad or Chinese herring) as another option for customers, priced at RM17 each.

"Our intention is to do business and do charity at the same time. Even though our profit is small, Alhamdulillah, we can help others with our affordable fish and let customers taste our self-made marinade (for the grilled fish).

"The cencaru that we are selling are small-sized so one to two fish would be sufficient per customer," he added.

Meanwhile, customer Muhammad Saifullah, 24, who is a regular at the stall, praised the affordable price and taste of the grilled fish.

"One will not be able to find such pricing elsewhere in Gua Musang. The grilled fish is tasty too just like the ones sold in other stalls. But other stalls sell their fish at RM4 each," he added. — Bernama
