Kelantan police nab two men linked to drug smuggling ring, seize 18,000 meth pills

KOTA BARU: Police detained two men, a local and a Thai national, for possession of 18,000 methamphetamine pills worth about RM180,000 recently.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said policemen arrested the two, who were riding a motorcycle, at Jalan Rantau Panjang on Sunday, after suspecting their involvement in drug actitivities.

Speaking at a press conference here today, Zaki said police also seized the Honda Vario motorcycle in the operation.

"A police team stopped the duo on the motorcycle when it passed the area at 4.15am. Upon checking, policemen found a plastic bag on the machine and discovered the meth pills," he added.

He said initial investigation showed that the 26-year-old local and the 27-year-old Thai national were members of a drug smuggling syndicate.

"Police believe the two, who both tested positive for drugs, smuggled the pills via an illegal route along the Kelantan/Thai border. The pills were meant for distribution to local suppliers and those in other states including the Klang Valley," he added.

Zaki said initial investigation revealed that the pills were meant for consumption for some 18,000 drug addicts. He said the operation was part of the eight-day Op Tapis Bersepadu which began on April 2. He added the operation, which ended on April 9, involved some 150 officers.

"We recorded 341 cases and arrested 439 people. During the operation, police also seized various types of drugs worth more than RM300,000," he added.

He said Kelantan police would continue co-operation with their Thai counterparts to curb drug smuggling activities.

"We suspect drug pushers are using Kelantan as a transit point to store drugs before sending them to other states," he added.
