KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a RM3 million allocation for Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to resolve its water problem.
During the "Temu Anwar" session at UMS here, he said solving the water issue was the responsibility of the government and should not have burdened the students and staff.
He also asked UMS to prepare the proposals for the allocation as there would be a top level meeting between Sabah and the federal government in Putrajaya tomorrow.
Anwar was responding to a question by a UMS student on the government's plan to tackle water theft, alternative water sources, updates on Telibong water treatment plant and corruption case related to water.
UMS is among premises in the west coast of Sabah affected by the water woes.
To mitigate the problem, UMS has installed a pipeline from a hill and also sourced gravity water, groundwater and rainwater to cater three to five million litres of water a day for the campus.
Present at the event were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, his deputy Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Yusof Apdal and Deputy Human Resources Minister Mustapha Sakmud.
UMS vice chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Md Mansur and board of directors' chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan also attended the event at Universiti Malaysia Sabah here.
