Not compulsory to invite any parties to Umno wings' assembly

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno wings are not obliged to invite any parties to its assembly, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

"It is not a problem as it is not compulsory for Umno wings to invite others (to their respective assembly).

"This, as Umno general assembly for the national level, has invited them (the component parties in the unity government).

"Therefore, there is no need for Umno wings to do so," he told reporters after attending the closing ceremony of the 'Jom Masuk U 2023' programme and the launch of the TVET Foundation Programme at Universiti Malaya today.

Khaled, who is also higher education minister, was responding to a question on Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who said the decision not to invite any parties to the wing's assembly in conjunction with the party's general assembly was made unanimously by all exco members and state Youth chiefs.

He said the decision was made through votes.

Earlier on Friday, Dr Akmal told an interview with Harian Metro that the wing would not be inviting the component parties in the unity government to the assembly for Youth.

Akmal said the party needed to correct problems in their house first, before inviting any parties.

On Friday, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that the assembly would be attended by Anwar as its guest of honour.

Asyraf said the assembly, which will be held between June 7 and 10, will also see the attendance of component party presidents, including from PKR and DAP which are part of the unity government.

The assembly will also kick off with a briefing session by the Umno president on June 7.
