FAM to prioritise competitions for women's football

KUALA LUMPUR: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) promise to prioritise women's football competitions following the appointment of coach Soleen Al-Zoubi.

The national women's team will play in several competitions from next year, especially the Sea Games.

A women's amateur league will also be introduced to unearth new talents and keep players active.

Malaysia were not represented at this year's Hanoi Sea Games.

FAM women's football committee chairperson Datuk Suraya Yaacob said: "We will definitely send a team to Phnom Penh for the Sea Games as that is Soleen's top priority.

"It is not about reaching the final but ensuring the team progresses by playing more games. We hope Soleen will help the women's team make inroads in the game," said Suraya.

Apart from the Sea Games in May, the other women's tournaments next year are the Hangzhou Asian Games and the AFF Championship, both in September.

FAM secretary-general Noor Azman Rahman said FAM will not interfere with Soleen's plans to develop a strong women's team.

"We will offer Soleen support and resources to build a solid foundation for women's football."

Soleen was unveiled as the new national women's coach at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya on Friday.

FAM are planning to introduce a women's national league next year.

"It will be an amateur league but may go semi-professional in the future," said Azman.
