Health Ministry enforcement officers to be fitted with bodycams

PUTRAJAYA: Health Ministry enforcement officers, especially those under the Public Health and Pharmacy Programme, will be equipped with body-worn cameras or bodycams to ensure transparency and safeguard their welfare.

Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said that the use of the technology will preserve integrity and improve the image of the ministry.

"I congratulate the Health Ministry, especially those under the Public Health and Pharmacy Programme on their initiative on the use of body camera technology in conducting their enforcement duties.

"The use of body cameras will not just ensure transparency in enforcement, but also preserve the welfare and safety of the officers when they are out doing their duties," she said in her inaugural monthly assembly at the ministry, here today.

Also present at the monthly assembly were Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Harjeet Singh.

Dr Zaliha also attached a body camera to an enforcement officer as a symbol of the initiative taken by the ministry.

The use of the technology during enforcement operations is aimed at overcoming the issues of threats and obstacles towards enforcement officers by sellers, premise owners as well as the general public.

Among the problems faced include death threats, attempts to hit the officer with a steel rod, verbal abuse and attempted bribery.

The implementation also serves as a proof or counter evidence for the enforcement officers towards any accusations during their enforcement operations.

It will also ensure the image and professionalism of MOH enforcement officers in the eyes of the public.
