BAGAN DATUK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said RM80 million has been allocated for the construction of permanent flood mitigation structures along the coast, as a long-term solution to the flood problem.
He said construction, set to start next year, will take three years to complete.
Zahid, who is also the National Disaster Management Committee chairman, said the implementation of the flood mitigation projects were made after taking into consideration the area sensitivity and rise in sea level.
"Several methods based on technical studies by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) will be coordinated by the district officer who is also the chairman of the disaster management committee at the district level.
"The area of which the flood mitigation structures will be built is an area that is very sensitive to the rise in sea level during high tide," he said, when met at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Tiang Darat temporary flood relief centre here, today.
The Bagan Datuk member of parliament said the district DID had been told to use all available water pumps to flush out stagnant floodwater.
"The district disaster management committee has already suggested nine locations to place the pump to resolve the stagnant floodwater issue.
"An immediate allocation is needed from the Prime Minister's Department's Implementation Coordination Unit and a special request to the Prime Minister for the opening of tenders to also include the specification, time period and quality of pumps required in these nine locations.
"What is proposed is a high-powered pump for stagnant water," he added.
As of 12pm today, 19 victims from 10 families have been housed at the temporary flood relief centre at SK Sungai Tiang Darat.
