Sabah taking measures to mitigate rising sea level in state capital

KOTA KINABALU: The local authority has started working on mitigation measures to address the rising sea level at the state capital.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip said that there were undeniably signs of water level in the coastal area rising.

"If we look at the water level, it has gone up. When we had the flash floods, we saw the sea water overflowing (into the city area).

"Issues on installing floodgates have been discussed with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

"At the same time, there is a need for DBKK to look into the development plan to reduce the environmental impact," she said at a press conference after the launching of the International Symposium on Developing and Managing Water's Edge City 2022 at a hotel here.

Noorliza said the two-day symposium that started today was aimed at learning from other experts on measures taken elsewhere to address the issue.

Last year, the state Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin had said that there would be multi-billion-ringgit projects involving a skytrain and a mixed commercial development called Jesselton New City.

The first phase of the skytrain would cover a distance of 10.5km from the airport to the city centre and the new development is expected to be built within three years at a cost of RM1 billion.

The second phase, which will take three years and spans over 15km, will extend to the government administrative centres just outside the city to University Malaysia Sabah and the nearby suburbs.

Present at the event was Assistant Minister to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir who represented Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Hajiji, in his speech read by Abidin, congratulated DBKK for being the first government building to have 5G coverage within the building in the east of Malaysia.
