#Showbiz: Filmmakers want LPF to re-look its censorship guidelines

KUALA LUMPUR: Film producers hope the Malaysian Film Censorship Board (LPF) will make amendments to its censorship guidelines which have become irrelevant today.

Director and actor Datuk Zahim Albakri said due to some of the agency's outdated guidelines, he almost gave up in completing the movie Split Gravy/Ke Mana Tumpahnya Kuah, which won seven awards, including Best Film at the recent 32nd Malaysian Film Festival (FFM32).

The 59-year-old artiste also suggested that the agency held discussions with relevant quarters in tackling the issue.

"Instead of being parked under the Home Ministry, perhaps the agency would be better if it's under the purview of the National Film Development Corporation (Finas)," he said.

Director Bade Azmi also shared his disappointment with LPF when some important scenes in his previous works were snipped away.

"Take KL Menjerit for example, illegal racing and accident scenes had been cut out. But this movie is about illegal street racers. If you take out the racing scenes, I have no story to tell," he said.

Director and producer Shuhaimi Lua said that LPF should be proactive and re-look the censorship SOPs for local films and drama series to make them relevant for today's audience.

"The scenario is different now. We also have the Over-The-Top (OTT) platform which has more flexibility and freedom when it comes to content.

"Why apply different sets of rules for OTT content? If you want to cut, cut the content for all the platforms if they don't comply with your rules," he questioned.
