Take immediate action to reduce and control the prices of all goods, CAP tells government

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) has found some traders taking advantage of the egg shortage situation by selling lower grade fresh eggs as premium grade eggs.

CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader said they had found some traders selling grade A and B eggs as premium AA grade eggs which are sold for 66 sen per egg.

For reference, grade A eggs have been set at 45 sen per egg and grade B eggs at 43 sen.

He urged the Domestic Trade and Cost-of-Living and the Agriculture and Food Security Ministries to resolve the supply shortage of chicken eggs issue immediately.

Mohideen said most of the grocers and public markets claimed that it had been difficult for them to get their supply since two months ago. This had created concern on the supply shortage in the future.

He added that chicken eggs were the cheapest source of protein in the market.

"CAP's survey found that chicken eggs were still available at the public markets and grocery stores around Gelugor, Bayan Baru, Jelutong and Batu Lanchang.

"However, the grocers claimed that it was difficult for them to get their supply as the quantity received from wholesalers were less than the traders at the markets," he said today.

"As such, CAP calls on the Domestic Trade and Cost-of-Living Ministry's enforcement division to investigate this matter as average income earners will be badly affected by escalating prices of goods.

"Immediate action should be taken to reduce and control the prices of all goods," he added.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government would unveil a new mechanism to control the market prices of eggs today.

He said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu would make the announcement.
