KUALA LUMPUR: Dengue cases recorded in Johor so far this year were more than double the number logged within the same period last year.

State Health and Unity Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said there were 3,600 cases up to Dec 3 this year (48th epidemiological or EW 48), a 118.7 per cent increase from the 1,646 infections logged within the same period in 2021.

"The number of cases in EW 48 this year also jumped to 152 cases, which is a 375 per cent increase from the 32 cases recorded in the same EW last year," he said in a statement here today.

He said the cumulative number of deaths over the period had decreased to three from five cases over the same period last year, but cautioned over the uptrend in cases especially due to the rains and stagnated water accumulating in containers that were not properly disposed.

The EW 48 has also registered one death. Cases for 2022 peaked at 159 infections in EW 45 (Nov 6 to 12). It dropped to 137 cases, and later rose to 142 and 152 cases in the following epidemiological weeks.

Of the total number of recorded cases, 1,278 cases (35.5 per cent) were reported from epidemic localities and 2,322 cases (64.5 per cent) from non-epidemic localities.

"Of the total number of dengue cases reported during EW 48, a total of 63 cases, or 41.4 per cent in infections, were reported from epidemic localities and 89 cases (58.6 per cent) from non-epidemic localities.

"Johor Baru recorded the highest number of cases. This accounts for 124 cases, or 81.6 per cent of the caseload, followed by Kulai with 13 cases. Pontian and Kota Tinggi recorded five and two cases respectively whereas Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing and Muar reported one case each. No cases were reported in Tangkak."

Districts that reported an increase in cases in the 48th epidemiological week compared with the preceding week were Johor Baru, Kulai, Muar, Segamat and Kota Tinggi, he said.

He said there there also 25 new outbreak localities in EW 48. All 25 of these localities were in Johor Baru. There were also 50 active outbreak localities in the district.

Overall, there were 397 cumulative outbreak localities in Johor so far this year compared with 158 in the same period in 2021, which was an increase of 151.3 per cent.

He said search and destroy activities were actively being carried out by the authorities and a total of 640 compounds at RM2,367,600 had been issued. Close to 70 per cent of the compounds have been settled.
