Works Ministry identifies 94 spots where floods, bad weather damaged roads

TANAH MERAH: The Works Ministry has identified 94 locations in the country with damaged roads caused by floods and bad weather.

Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this included 61 flood locations in several states.

He said 42 federal roads and 52 state roads in eight states, including Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Negri Sembilan, were on the list.

"Of the 94 locations, floods involved 61 of them, 19 involved collapsed slopes; six sunk roads; five collapsed roads and three damaged or collapsed bridges."

Nanta said Terengganu and Kelantan were the most affected with six districts each, followed by Pahang and Negri Sembilan with four districts each.

"Kedah and Johor each had two affected districts, and Selangor and Perak each had one district," Nanta said after visiting the Kusial Bridge, here, where the soil under its structure had eroded because of last Sunday's flooding.

He said the losses from the damaged infrastructure were being assessed.

"We will try to start repairs as soon as possible. It will involve a high cost," he said.

Commenting on his visit to two locations in Kelantan, Nanta said repairs to the Kota Baru-Kuala Terengganu federal trunk road (FT003), which was damaged due to flooding last Sunday, would cost an estimated RM850,000.

"The cost of repairing the collapsed bank under the Kusial Bridge has not yet been ascertained but the bridge is safe for use because it does not involve structural damage.

"Nevertheless, the Public Works Department and concession companies will closely monitor it."
