Govt can save RM6b if flaws highlighted in AG's report duly rectified - PM

PUTRAJAYA: The government can save RM6 billion if weaknesses detailed in the Auditor-General's Report are rectified by political leaders and civil servants, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"Yesterday, the cabinet ministers scrutinised the 2012 Auditor's General report.

"If the political leaders and civil servants can improve on all the weaknesses as stated repeatedly in the report by the auditor-general, I believe that we can save up to RM6 billion," he said in his speech here today after launching the "MADANI Nation" slogan, which replaces former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's "Keluarga Malaysia" tagline.

The new tagline was launched in conjunction with the discourse on "Developing a MADANI Nation" at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here.

Anwar said the savings were estimated based on the report, studies on big projects and enforcement bodies.

If the projects were carried out carefully, transparently, and responsibly, billions of ringgit could be saved, he said.

"If our funds are less than RM15 billion, with efficient and good management, we can save without new projects, efforts and initiatives.

"This cannot be implemented by the cabinet ministers only, but we need a full force of strength."

Anwar said a sustainable economy can only be achieved with good governance.

Therefore, he said, all the measures set to be announced on Feb 24 during the 2023 Budget to be tabled again at the Dewan Rakyat would see the administration returning to the basics; the speed up of approval and stop the practice of getting commissions.

"All these can increase the confidence and establish a system that will not 'choose feathers' in carrying out responsibilities and will not oppress the individuals or factions not supportive towards us.

"This is what is called the government machinery that is responsible for implementing policies, functioning at the optimum level, and solving the governance issue with coordination. InsyaAllah, our economy will be better," he said, adding such efforts must start with the top leadership.

In his speech, Anwar also stated that the absence of transparent control of political power as well as good governance will cause the people to continue to be robbed.

He said without the people-centric economy, a new system also known as privatisation caused the robbery to continue.

Citing the use of water and electricity as an example, Anwar said the 'robbery' happens every minute, month, and year.

"That is why our policy must guarantee support to capitalists (investors) so that economic activities can be carried out well, but not to the extent of causing misery to the people," he said.
