Model hits back at critics over 'revealing' saree in Pongal clips

KUALA LUMPUR: A model has sparked controversy after posting a video of herself in midriff-baring saree in conjunction with the Ponggal festival last weekend.

The series of clips posted on local actress and model Gayathri Moorthi's TikTok page caused discontent among netizens, who had criticised her dressing, with some even describing it as "vulgar".

TikTok user Daughter of Sivalingam commented: "This makes me sad… Why (did you not) adjust the saree before shooting (the video)? Did they not give you enough time?"

Another user, Pikaboo, said: "Is this level of vulgarity necessary for Ponggal?"

The videos were also posted onto her Facebook page. Most of those who commented had wished her "Happy Ponggal", but some netizens also lashed out at her decision to expose her midriff.

User Rock Rocky said: "This celebration is a cultural Tamil celebration. Is it necessary for you to show off your body to gain likes?

"Please don't insult the Tamil culture," the user said.

Her videos had since received more than 500,000 views on TikTok alone.

In response, Gayathri said social media users should not spread toxicity in the name of protecting culture.

She lambasted her critics, saying that it was the Indian culture to be kind and not insult others.

"When you speak about culture, is it only about someone's dressing? In movies you would enjoy similar content, but when it comes to Malaysian artistes wearing the same, you would give negative comments.

"Why the double standard? Wearing (something similar) in India, it is called fashion, but when I do it here, it looks disgusting?

"If you don't know about fashion, please get off social media, it is not for you," she said.
