Aid pours in for victims of devastating Turkiye earthquakes

ISTANBUL: Turkish television and radio stations last week joined forces to hold an aid drive to help victims of the devastating earthquakes, raising over 115.1 billion Turkish liras (US$6.1 billion).

The campaign was called Türkiye One Heart, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported on Feb 15.

It said companies, institutions, organisations and individuals donated to the campaign during a joint live broadcast through 200 television and 500 radio stations.

AA reported that among the top donors was the Turkish Central Bank, which contributed 30 billion Turkish liras (US$1.6 billion), followed by state-run lenders Ziraat with 20 billion liras (US$1 billion), Vakif with 12 billion liras (US$637 million) and Halk, which donated 7 billion liras (US$371.3 million).

Turkiye's GSM operators Turkcell and Turk Telekom contributed 3.5 billion liras (US$185.6 million) and 2 billion liras (US$106 million), respectively, it further said.

AA noted that Cengiz Holding and Kalyoncular Holding, two large Turkish corporations, made contributions of 2.5 billion Turkish liras (equivalent to US$132.6 million) and 950 million liras (equivalent to $50.4 million), respectively, as donations.

Türkiye Sigorta, Borsa Istanbul, and the Saving Deposit Insurance Fund of Turkiye each made a donation of 2 billion Turkish liras, which is equivalent to US$106 million, the report said.

In addition, it said Baykar, a defense firm, and Turkish Airlines, the national airline, also made donations of 2 billion liras each.

Many prominent figures, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Cabinet members, leaders of opposition parties, and several celebrities made substantial contributions to the campaign, AA said.

It added that the funds collected through the campaign would be sent to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency and the Turkish Red Crescent Society.
