MCA party polls to take place in April, June

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA party polls at the branch and division levels will take place in April and June, respectively.

Party secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the elections at the state and central levels could not be held simultaneously due to the possible overlapping with the upcoming state elections.

"In view of the upcoming elections for six states, the dates for voting at the state and central committees will be announced later.

"Should the dates for the state elections coincide with the party polls, there might be adjustments.

"We have set a date for the Youth and women's wings elections at the central level, and if there is no change, it will be held this September," he said at a press conference ahead of the party's 74th anniversary and party election at Wisma MCA today.

Chong said according to Article 167 of MCA's constitution, party elections must be convened within six months after general elections.

"As the 15th General Election concluded on Nov 19, 2022, the MCA Central Committee, in a meeting, had resolved that a 2023 Party Headquarters Election Steering Committee be established and that it will be headed by the MCA secretary-general."

He said there was no pressing need to announce the dates for the party elections at the state level as this only involved the Youth and women's wings, which may be carried out only after the completion of voting at the branch and division levels.

Chong said MCA will hold its 74th anniversary celebration on March 4.

At the celebration, party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong will launch the book Malaysian Chinese Association: From Alliance to Barisan Nasional, published by the Institute of Social Economic Research of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology.
