Satiananthan: Voice concerns over refereeing quality to Malaysian Football League

KUALA LUMPUR: Rules are meant to be strictly followed, but it is frustrating for clubs and coaches when referees make mistakes during matches.

Coaches are not allowed to vent their frustration to the public.

However, there are proper channels for a club to complain about match officials.

While referees have been punished before for making mistakes, clubs lose out as results cannot be over-turned.

However, it does not happen only in the M-League. It is a problem worldwide, although the video-assistant referee minimises mistakes.

Football Coaches Association of Malaysia (FCAM) president B. Satiananthan said it was frustrating when he was coaching clubs.

"Coaches must adhere to the Malaysian Football League (MFL) rules. There is a clause in their contracts which does not allow them to complain publicly over issues. However, their clubs can go to the MFL for a response," said Satiananthan.

"But in the heat of things, coaches tend to voice out about referees during press conferences after matches.

"For any issue, clubs should write to the relevant parties for a review."

Satiananthan is responding to Croatian Bojan Hodak's statement on allowing coaches to criticise match officials on Saturday.

"Hodak just want to see changes. But I think his club should push for these changes.

"The league's stakeholders must voice their concerns to the MFL. When you push for improvements, then there will be action.

"Being a coach is a high-risk job. Coaches are the first to go, not the club president and other officials, when the club fails to achieve target."

MFL could not be reached for comment.
