#TECH: Squid Game enters virtual reality realm

KUALA LUMPUR: Sandbox VR has announced its collaboration with Netflix for a fully immersive Squid Game virtual reality experience.

With its motion-tracking technology and high-quality haptic system, it captures the player's body movement and provides them with unprecedented realism and complete immersion.

Basically, the players' bodies act as controllers.

Sandbox VR founder and chief executive officer, Steve Zhao said they aim to bring people closer together through world-class immersive experiences.

"What could be a more perfect fit than Squid Game, the most widely shared and discussed television series of the past years. It's an amazing opportunity to partner with Netflix to provide these fans the chance to transport themselves into the world of the show," he said.

Currently, the company has six proprietary experiences based on both exclusive licensing of Hollywood properties and their own intellectual property.

The experiences are developed by an in-house AAA gaming studio led by industry veterans for teams of up to six friends to play as social experiences.

The Sandbox VR x Squid Game virtual reality experience is set to open in late 2023 where players are transported to Squid Game locations to vie against each other. Players will also get personalised highlight videos on their in-game reactions.

Sandbox VR is now operating in over 30 global locations and expanding rapidly. With a dozen locations launched in the last 12 months, each 5,000+ sq ft with at least 4 decks in which guests experience the virtual worlds, Sandbox VR is the fastest-growing location-based VR start-up in the world.
