5,925 metric tonnes of waste collected following Johor floods

JOHOR BARU: A total of 5,925 metric tonnes of rubbish was collected during the post-flood clean-up operation in Johor from March 3 until yesterday.

Deputy Local Government Development Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the amount of rubbish was expected to increase as the cleaning operation was still ongoing until the end of March.

He said the cleaning operation in Segamat was fully completed on March 19, while Batu Pahat is expected to be completed today.

"We expect the entire post-flood cleaning operation to be completed by the end of this month," said Akmal Nasrullah during a press conference after officiating the SWM Kasih Back to School programme here today.

Present at the conference were Johor SWCorp deputy director Rafidah Mohamed and SWM Environment Sdn Bhd Corporate Affairs general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin.

Akmal Nasrullah also said the cleaning operation was carried out in phases, and as many as six temporary disposal sites were created to ensure prompt cleaning of the rubbish.

He added that the concession company also helped the affected villages, which were not in the service area through the cleaning operation.

Meanwhile, Mohd Norlisam called on the organisers and traders at 112 bazaar locations statewide to use the provided garbage bins to facilitate the cleaning operation at Ramadan bazaars in Johor.

He also called on the public to avoid piling rubbish at the end of housing estates or creating illegal garbage sites, especially while preparing for Raya. — Bernama
