6 nabbed for breaking into homes, schools in Perak

BALING: Police believe they have solved several burglaries of houses and at least one school in three districts in Perak with the arrests of six people, including two women.

District police chief Superintendent Shamsudin Mamat said the arrests came about after police began investigations into a primary school in Kupang last month.

He said police received a report on Feb 27 from the school's security guard saying a certain amount of money from book sales were lost in the burglary.

He said, following the report, a special operation codenamed Op Pintu Khas was launched by Baling police.

"The operation managed to nab a group of criminals in three separate raids in Pulai and Bongor on Feb 28.

"From the group, we managed to seize a number of items linked to several burglaries," he said.

Shamsudin said the six people, aged between 23 and 56, were all locals.

He said investigations revealed that one of the men arrested had a criminal record for various crimes and drug-related offences, while another had a record for burglary and was on the police wanted list.

"Two of the six also tested positive for methamphetamine abuse. Four of them have since admitted to several burglaries in the Baling, Sungai Petani and Sik districts since the beginning of the year," he said.

Shamsudin said one of the men was believed to be the leader of the group and was also involved in several break-ins in Kupang district.

He said the two women played the role of "pointers" — picking out premises to be targetted.

They were also the ones who sold stolen items such as jewellery to pawnshops in Kuala Ketil, Baling, Sungai Petani, Sik and Pengkalan Hulu.

"These women were the girlfriends of two of the men who were arrested. Among the loot we recovered were 13 pieces of gold, two gold rings, two gold bracelets, a gold chain, a 32-inch television, a PSP game console, six watches, a handbag and a MyKid.

"We believe we have solved 19 burglaries at houses and schools with these arrests in this district alone. Losses amounted to about RM150,000.

"They were also believed to have been involved in one case each in Sungai Petani and Kulim, as well as two cases each in Sik and Pengkalan Hulu."
