Next generation of Harimau

KUALA LUMPUR: A good production line for Harimau Malaya, and a good buildup for May's Phnom Penh Sea Games.

That is Azraai Khor Abdullah's view of the national Under-22 side that have reached the Merlion Cup final against Hong Kong tomorrow at Singapore's Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Sea Games-bound team, coached by E. Elavarasan, beat Cambodia 4-2 yesterday.

Azraai said the Malaysian team can reach the Sea Games final if they rectify the mistakes made during the Merlion Cup.

"But these boys should be sent for mental strength training," said Azraai.

"The defensive third also needs to learn not to give away unnecessary fouls which invite danger."

Azraai, meanwhile, urged the Young Tigers to improve their game in order for "home-grown talent" to maintain a strong presence in the national team that increasingly have more foreign-born naturalised players.

"It's important to focus on these local boys for the future. Right now, there aren't many locals (in the national team), and this (under-22 team) have potential." said Azraai.
