Sea Games: Heartbreak for Malaysia in obstacle race final

PHNOM PENH: It turned out to be a heartbreaking affair for Malaysia in the Sea Games men's obstacle race relay final at Chroy Changvar Convention Centre here.

In the final, Malaysia were in the lead, but the Philippines raced ahead during the last obstacle leg to win the gold medal in 24.47s.

Malaysia's Ghalib Azimi, Redha Rozlan, Nuur Hafis Said Alwi and William Yoong Wei Theng clocked 25.15s for the silver. Indonesia and Laos won the bronze.Captain Redha said they had sacrificed time and energy to prepare for the Sea Games.

"We worked hard and even trained in Manila during Ramadan. We celebrated Hari Raya in Manila just to prepare for the Sea Games," said Redha today.Redha hopes their performances here will help the sport earn recognition in Malaysia.

"We hope relevant parties, including the Sports Ministry, will provide us with a complete set of obstacles for training."With better support and assistance, we will be able to win a gold, hopefully, in the next Sea Games.

"In Malaysia, we lack training facilities. We do most of our training in the gym."It was the 35-year-old's third appearance at the Sea Games.

He won a silver in wall climbing on his debut at the 2011 Palembang edition and three silver (in obstacle races) at the 2019 Manila Games.In the women's relay competition today, Malaysia shared the bronze with Cambodia. The Philippines won the title, while Indonesia took the silver.
