Mohammed Rashdan resigns as Gamuda deputy group MD

KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd has announced the resignation of Mohammed Rashdan Mohd Yusof as deputy group managing director effective today.

In a statement, Gamuda said Rashdan, 52, had relinquished all directorships and is currently serving notice, with his last day at the company to be June 30.

Gamuda said Rashdan's departure from the company is to focus his attention and effort on serving his national duty.

"The group extends its best wishes to Rashdan for his future endeavours, including for his role as the chairman of the Energy Commission.

"Rashdan assured the board that there had been full compliance with all conflict-of-interest provisions as stated in the Energy Commission Act (Act 610) and that good governance was observed in all of his deliberations at the Energy Commission (EC)," it added.

Gamuda also noted that Datuk Ha Tiing Tai remains the serving deputy group managing director, a position he has held since June 1, 2012.

Rashdan joined Gamuda on May 1, 2018, as the deputy group managing director and was subsequently appointed as the alternate director to Datuk Lin Yun Ling on September 28, 2018.

He has 26 years of experience in corporate finance and investment banking, corporate consulting, and financial services.

During his tenure with Gamuda, Rashdan was instrumental in the highway sale involving Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat Bhd's (ALR) takeover of the following Klang Valley highway concessionaires, namely Lingkaran Trans Kota Sdn Bhd (Litrak), Sistem Penyuraian Trafik KL Barat Sdn Bhd (Sprint), Kesas Sdn Bhd (Kesas) and Syarikat Mengurus Air Banjir dan Terowong Sdn Bhd (SMART).

Previously, the government was urged to revoke the appointment of Rashdan to the EC following a conflict of interest regarding the company's involvement in renewable energy.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he would look into the appointment following the allegations.

On the other hand, industry sources have said that it is legally not wrong for Rashdan to double up as chairman of the EC, according to a previous report by NST Business.

Referring to the Energy Commission Act 2001, they said Rashdan's appointment might be a conflict of interest, but it was allowed by the law.
