Golok river continues to dry up

RANTAU PANJANG: The Golok river, which separates Kelantan from Thailand, continues to dry up due to the hot weather.

Villagers along the river said it had been drying up since last month.

A villager who only wanted to be known as Kak Mah said the Golok river had been drying up drastically due to the heatwave and this resulted in shallow water in certain spots.

"Locals can easily wade across the river.

"But in some locations, the water is still deep and locals still have to use the sampan to cross," said the 56-year-old.

It is learnt that the heatwave has also caused a river in Kuala Krai to completely dry up.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) recently issued a level 1 alert or yellow alert for hot weather for four areas in the peninsula: Kuala Krai and Pasir Mas in Kelantan; Rompin in Pahang and Muar in Johor.

The alert level refers to a daily maximum temperature of 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days.

Malaysia is expected to experience prolonged hot weather from now until August, due to the monsoon transition season.
