Mental overhaul psyched jiu-jitsu exponent Adam for breakthrough

PHNOM PENH: With the help of a sports psychologist, jiu-jitsu exponent Adam Akasyah believes he is mentally ready for the Sea Games here.

The Petaling Jaya-born will open his campaign tomorrow against Thailand's Janthanaka Sukitpeerarat in the men's below 69kg Gi event at the Chroy Changvar Convention Hall.

If he wins, Adam will likely face Singapore's Noah Lim, who defeated the Malaysian for the gold medal at last year's Hanoi edition.

Adam revealed he had undergone a comprehensive training programme under national coach Lim Fang Han to prepare for the Sea Games.

The Malaysia Jiu-Jitsu Federation (MJFF) engaged sports psychologist Dr Rebecca Wong, a former National Sports Institute (NSI) employee, to help Adam and his teammate Damon Soo prepare mentally for the challenge.

"We had the best preparations possible leading up to the Games. The coaches also covered visualisation training. Furthermore, we had several sessions with a psychologist.

"I am 100 per cent ready for the Games and hope to deliver a gold medal. I feel no pressure, thanks to the psychologist.

It will be Adam's third Games. He won a bronze on his debut at the 2019 Manila edition.
