Nasyid singer Muhammad Yasin referred to Hospital Bahagia for mental evaluation

PETALING JAYA: The Sessions Court, here, this morning has ordered nasyid singer Muhammad Yasin to be referred to Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan for a mental evaluation.

This was ordered by Judge Nik Nasimah Nik Mohammad after hearing submissions for the application made by Yasin's lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein today.

Earlier, Ariff had made an applications under Section 324 of the Criminal Procedure Code, for a referral based on reasons that there is a strong basis for Yasin's mental health to be evaluated and observed by psychiatric experts to ascertain whether Yasin is fit to stand trial or not.

The lawyer submitted a five-page medical report that includes Yasin's mental health history that confirms he has been suffering from Bipolar Disorder Type 1 since 2007 and past manic attacks that could harm him.

Ariff also submitted a recent medical report by University Malaya Specialist Centre that confirmed Yasin's mental and physical health is deteriorating, which could potentially harm his life.

No objection was recorded from deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Zuhaini regarding the application.

The court then ordered Yasin to be referred to Hospital Bahagia starting today for observation and fixed June 22 for mention.

The Mimpi Laila singer was charged with ingesting cannabis at the Petaling Jaya District Headquarters Narcotics Office at 11.05 pm last March 24.

He faces a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or a maximum jail term of two years if convicted.

He was also charged with possessing cannabis-type drugs weighing 193.7 grams and cultivating 17 cannabis plants in plastic pots at his residence at Persiaran Surian Damansara Indah Resort Homes, PJU 3, Kota Damansara here, at 5.30pm on the same date.

The drug possession charge carries life imprisonment or not less than five years with no less than 10 strokes of the rotan if convicted.
