Sea Games: Assyira retains cross country silver

PHNOM PENH: National rider Nur Assyira Zainal Abidin overcame tough opponents and conditions to defend her silver medal in the women's individual cross country mountain bike (MTB) competition in Siem Reap today.

Assyira crossed the line second at Kulen Mountain - roughly 320 kilometres from the capital - in a time of one hour, 17 minutes and nine seconds.

Indonesia's Sayu Bella Sukma Dewi claimed the gold on 1:13:48s while Thailand's Yonthanan Ponkhla (1:18:42s) completed the podium.

National team manager Saiful Abdul Jalil said it was a surprise result as Assyira was up against strong riders in the searing heat.

"We are grateful to come away with the silver as we did not have high expectations for this event," said Saiful.

"This result will definitely inspire the rest of the squad ahead of our upcoming events."

The MTB squad are hoping to win at least one gold at the Sea Games this year.
