Sivasangari will still train under coach Palmer

KUALA LUMPUR: United States-based S. Sivasangari will still train under world-class coach David Palmer despite completing her studies at Cornell University in New York.

Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) director Major (rtd) S. Maniam confirmed Sivasangari will continue training under Palmer.

"Sivasangari will still be based in Cornell to train under Palmer.

"We will work with her when she is in Malaysia. All expenses are covered, and this has been discussed with Sivasangari.

"She is playing very well on the PSA Tour. And I am sure that she will do well at the Asian Individual Championships in Hong Kong from June 6-10," said Maniam after the unveiling of SRAM's official apparel for the 2023 season in Bukit Jalil today.

Other Malaysians in the fray are second seed Rachel Arnold, Aifa Azman and Ainaa Amani.

Maniam said his charges have a chance of winning the women's title in Hong Kong.

"World No. 18 Satomi Watanabe is the top seed. The Japanese star has shown progress in tournaments.

"She will be Malaysia's main obstacle. I hope our players will raise their game and shine in Hong Kong," said Maniam.

World No 25 Rachel Arnold is Malaysia's highest-ranked player, followed by Aifa (world No. 26), Sivasangari (33) and Ainaa (63).

For the record, Nicol David was the last Malaysian woman to win the Asian Championships, achieved in 2015.

In the men's competition, world No. 20 Ng Eain Yow is the favourite to defend his men's title.

The other contenders are India's Saurav Ghosal and Hong Kong's Yip Tsz Fung.
