KUALA LUMPUR: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang slammed Pas for twisting his words, which led to misunderstanding that it had proposed the Islamist party to join the unity government.
Reiterating his stance, Lim, in a commentary posted on his blog, said his proposal for cooperation between the unity government and Pas to resolve long standing water woes in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah was a personal idea, not an official proposal by DAP.
Lim said Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had been irresponsible in saying that he had extended an invitation to Pas to be in the unity government.
"Pas information chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin said that 'it was in fact DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang who had the overture' that Pas joined the Anwar unity government.
"Khairil is wrong. I am not the DAP adviser.
"Hadi had not acted as a responsible, honest, and respected Islamic leader in the run-up to the 15th general election last November, as Hadi was found to be the most strident in inciting ethnic-based narratives on social media in the lead-up to the 15th general election (GE15), according to an independent report revealed yesterday," read the blog.
The report titled "Social Media monitoring of Malaysia's 15th General Elections" said Abdul Hadi and his party were complicit to incitement by neither calling out nor restricting social media users from further spreading hate in relation to ethnic groups, Lim said.
With a total of 99,563 unique messages on social media analysed between Oct 20 and Nov 26 last year, the report found that "a significant majority" of social media posts comprised ethnic and religion-based narratives, Lim said.
"Will Hadi apologise for his irresponsible and dishonest role in the social media in the run-up to the GE15 as revealed by the report?" Lim asked.
Hadi was reported as saying that some individuals had contacted him to offer for Pas to join the unity government.
He claimed that the offer came about after Pakatan Harapan (PH), especially PKR, realised that its position was unstable because the number of its Malay seats were not as many as Pas.
Pas' Khairil Nizam later revealed Lim Kit Siang had made the offer, saying that DAP had approached the party with the goal of strengthening its support among the Malay community.
In response, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said he had never made such an offer, while Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported as saying that there was no effort to include Pas in the unity government.
