Supply of eggs exceeding demand, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR:  Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the supply of chicken eggs in the country exceeds domestic demand.

Zahid, who is National Action Council for Cost of Living (NACCOL) chairman, attributed the development to the strategic cooperation between the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) and 11 suppliers to address the shortage of eggs in the country.

He said Fama could supply 1.33 million eggs weekly, which are distributed to its retail premises nationwide.

"As of May 8, Fama has distributed 28.1 million eggs to farmers' markets, and Agrobazar Kedai Rakyat across the country," he told reporters here today.

Zahid said Fama had been instructed to hold more farmers' markets  in densely populated areas in the peninsula to ensure the price of food was reasonable.

"I have instructed  Fama to come out with a plan to set up  1,391 farmers' markets at densely populated areas in the peninsular.

"Fama also wanted to introduce the same concept in Sabah and Sarawak. However, (people in) these states are more comfortable with the pasar tamu concept.

"Therefore, we will make adjustments to the programme accordingly," he said.
