Car crashes into group sheltering under NKVE flyover, killing 3

KUALA LUMPUR: Three motorcyclists were killed and three others were injured when a car ploughed into them at Km19.6 of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) near here, early today.

The 5.59am incident involved a car driver who was believed to be drunk. The motorcyclists had been seeking shelter from the rain under a flyover along the southbound lane of the expressway.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said police were notified of the accident at 6.50am, and early reports stated that it involved a car and six motorcycles.

Initial investigations revealed that car involved in the crash was a Honda City driven by a 26-year-old Malaysian man who was heading to Cyberjaya from the federal capital.

"When the man reached the accident location, he lost control of his vehicle and it crashed into six motorcyclists who were seeking shelter from the rain under a bridge," Fakhrudin said in a statement today.

The victims -- all men -- were aged between 19 and 37 and were rushed to the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

"A test revealed that the driver's blood alcohol levels exceeded the permitted amount. The man was detained for further investigation under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," said Fakhrudin.

He urged those who witnessed the incident to go to the nearest police station or contact traffic investigating officer Inspector R. Navalan at 014-253 6820 to assist in investigations.
