Kindergarten break-in suspect nabbed one year later

KULAI: A closed-circuit television recording of a break-in at a kindergarten a year ago enabled police to apprehend a 31-year-old suspect at Felda Bukit Ramun, in Gugusan Felda Taib Andak near here yesterday.

The CCTV recordings had captured an unidentified man tampering with the kindergarten's front door before escaping with a laptop and projector.

The preschool, operating in Jalan Kenari, Bandar Putra, incurred loses of about RM2,000. Its operator had low hopes of the case being solved.

However, the case was not closed, despite the difficulty faced by Kulai district police officers to gather sufficient evidence to identify the perpetrator.

Its acting chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said that police, acting on a tip-off, made their way to the Felda estate and arrested a 31-year-old man in front of a tuck shop at 7.30pm yesterday.

Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted to the kindergarten break-in.

Investigations also revealed that the culprit, who tested positive for drug-abuse, had six prior criminal and drug-related offenses.

He was also on the Kulai police wanted list in relation to a case under Section 15(1)(A) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Police found a laptop and projector among the items seized. The victims will be called in to identify the said items. It is believed the suspect is allegedly involved in several other break-ins in the district.

Yusof said the suspect has been remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations under Section 457 of the Penal Code. Upon conviction, he could face a 14-year imprisonment term, a fine and strokes of the rotan.
