Logical for PN to give majority of seats to Pas say experts

KUALA LUMPUR: The fact that Perikatan Nasional (PN) is giving Pas the lion's share of seats in the state elections is not unexpected, say experts.

Professor James Chin from the University of Tasmania's Asia Institute said it would be "foolish" for PN not to do this, as Pas has a strong base in the northern and eastern regions.

"There is no strategy, and it was purely straightforward in how the seats were divided. There is also no other way but to give Kelantan and Terengganu to Pas, which are strong bases (for it).

"(Tan Sri) Muhyiddin (Yassin) is also hoping for a repeat of the pattern from the general election last year, when Pas did well," the political analyst said.

Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said the number of seats given to Pas was unsurpising.

"The lion's share given to Pas is normal. It is also because the party has more incumbent seats than its counterparts Bersatu and Gerakan.

"By analogy, Pakatan Harapan will also get more seats than Barisan Nasional in the three states it governs."

PN chairman Muhyiddin recently announced that the coalition would contest all 245 seats in six states.

Pas will contest 126 seats; Bersatu, 83; and Gerakan, 36.
