EC wisely picked non-working days for nomination and polling says Mohd Amar

KOTA BARU: The Election Commission's (EC) is wise in fixing non-working days for nomination and polling in the six state elections, says Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah

The party, he said, believes the EC had taken into account the interests of all quarters before making the decision.

"All questions were resolved after the announcement. The dates chosen are suitable because they are non-working days in all states.

"This actually was among our concerns, that the nomination and polling days would fall on a working day.

"This would have made it difficult for voters to return to their respective constituencies. But now that polling day is on a Saturday, we wish to thank the EC for the wise decision," he added.

Mohd Amar, who is caretaker deputy menteri besar, was speaking to reporters after attending the graduation ceremony at Maahad Muhammadi Perempuan here today.

On the election campaign, he said, "After the EC's announcement yesterday, Pas' election machinery has been instructed to go into full gear".

Asked whether the party would provide assistance, such as free bus tickets for returning voters, he said the party so far had no plan to do that.

Yesterday, the EC fixed Aug 12 as polling day and July 29 as nomination day for the six state elections.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh also announced that early voting would be on Aug 8.

He said it would be a two-week campaign period for the 245 seats up for election, which costs a total of RM420 million.

In Kelantan, 45 state seats will be contested.

Before the dissolution of the state assembly on June 22, Pas held 37 seats followed by Barisan Nasional with seven and Bersatu (one).
