IPGK Gaya's 173-hour static cycling feat earns spot in 'Malaysia Book of Records'

KOTA KINABALU: Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Gaya (IPGK Gaya) near here recently earned a place in the "Malaysia Book of Records" by setting a new record of 173 hours in a static cycling programme.

This shattered the previous record of 144 hours set by the Sandakan Industrial Training Institute in 2014.

The programme, involving 40 students, was held in conjunction with IPGK Gaya's 60th anniversary celebration.

Each participant had to cycle continuously for an hour using a stationary bicycle, and then another participant would take over.

The participants cycled from 10am on June 27 until 3pm on July 4, clocking a total of 173 hours.

IPGK Gaya director Dr Gertrude Jock, in a statement, said the idea for the "Malaysia Book of Records" endurance cycling programme was mooted by its co-curriculum unit lecturer, Alvin Raj.

"They (students) worked together to ensure the success of the programme, and we are grateful for the continuous support of the stakeholders, in line with our motto of being 'united in heart, soul and style'.

"The dedication and commitment shown by the participants proved that they would become educators with a strong spirit."

Alvin said the programme was held in line with the director's vision of developing competitive teachers through challenging physical and mental activities.

"This programme helps students build strong self-identity to face any challenge that comes their way, and to be mentally and physically prepared.

"Students can apply psychomotor, cognitive and affective values in management, leadership and co-curricular skills.

"It is also in line with the objectives of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 and will greatly benefit students in terms of mental resilience, including self-control, commitment and confidence."

MBR static cycling programme participant Bernard Leu Ching Yoong, 21, said the programme was an inspiration for IPGK Gaya students to achieve success and cultivate a never-give-up attitude.

"As a teacher, I aspire to become a role model for my students, and through this experience, I hope to motivate them as well.

"I would like to thank everyone involved for giving me and my friends this valuable opportunity. If given the chance, we would gladly take on such challenges again."
