MMA: Govt told to empathise with doctors relocated to another state

KUALA LUMPUR: The government must empathise with doctors, who have been relocated to another state, says the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

"While we recognise that doctors should be posted where their services are required, the challenges these doctors face in relocating to another state should be taken into consideration," said MMA president Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai in a statement today.

Dr Muruga called on the government to have plans in place to aid in the transition of these doctors.

"The government must ensure that there is no disruption of healthcare services in any healthcare centres during relocations and that the training of medical officers, who are undergoing specialist training, remains unaffected."

"They must consider a reasonable placement allowance for doctors who have been instructed to relocate as they will be providing an essential service.

"An adequate and detailed notice must be given to doctors on where and when they would have to be relocated."

He added that the government should allow medical officers, who have served for a stipulated time in Sabah and Sarawak, to apply for a transfer and called for the process to be simple and transparent.

"In the long run, we have to improve our healthcare worker distribution system to ensure that the Health Ministry is able to meet the healthcare needs of the population."
