Temper tantrum in Sungai Long: Housewife fined RM2,000

KAJANG: A housewife who threw a university student's mobile phone to the ground and hit her with a book in a meltdown which went viral on August 1, was fined RM 2,000 by the magistrates court here today.

Magistrate Nik Siti Norazlini Nik Mohamed Faiz meted out the sentence to Chew Soo Li, 51 after she pleaded guilty to two charges today.

According to the charges, Chew had damaged a mobile phone belonging to Jocelyn Foo Qai Yen, 20, by throwing it to the ground near Jalan Sungai Long, Bandar Sungai Long at 2pm on August 3 and had incurred damages of more than RM25.

The charges were under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of five years or a fine or both.

Chew was also charged for inflicting injuries to the same person when she had hit her with a book inside a convenience store near the same location of the first charge.

This was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, providing imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Norfarhanim Abdul Halim asked the court to impose a relevant penalty towards the accused as a lesson to society.

She also said that the court should take into account the soft tissue injuries and damages inflicted on the victim as well as the frequency of such cases.

In mitigation, Chew, who was represented by lawyer Priyalatha Sivaprakasam, asked for leniency and a lower fine as she is a mother of four children and that her husband was unable to work due to health issues.

The lawyer also added that the remand for five days had served as a lesson and that the accused has promised that she would not repeat such an offence.

The court imposed a fine of RM1,000 in default of one month jail for each charge.

It was earlier reported that a video of Chew went viral after she had a meltdown when the local municipal council clamped her tyres at Sungai Long for double parking.

Instead of trying to resolve the issue, Chew was seen throwing a fit in the incident where she had also snatched a mobile phone from a bystander and smashed it on the ground.
