Umno Youth calls for investigation into viral 'internal memo'

MELAKA: Umno Youth has called on the Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun to investigate the legitimacy of the contents of a document that is claimed to be an 'Internal Memo' of the Attorney General's Chambers regarding former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Its chief, Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh said this following the revelation of the document that went viral recently, which claimed the link between the International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC) prosecution team and the former prime minister.

"The 12-page document that is dated 10 September 2019 also touched on the six charges made against Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.

"The content of the viral document is in the form of a recommendation from the IPIC prosecution team who unanimously took the position that the six charges involved do not meet the minimum requirements for a charge of breach of trust (CBT) to obtain a prima facie case.

"The document is allegedly addressed to Tan Sri Tommy Thomas (Attorney General at the time)," he said on Facebook.

Akmal said that Umno Youth takes the matter seriously as the disclosure contained in the document contained a summary of detailed evidence and clearly had an impact on the six-charge case against Najib which is still ongoing in court.

He added that if the document that went viral is true, the AGC should take appropriate action by withdrawing the six charges against Najib and Mohd Irwan in line with the recommendations in the document.

"If the content of the document is authentic, Umno Youth is urging an investigation on whether there is abuse of power and position by certain individuals that is against the law.

"In fact, this kind of political prosecution element is only to give a negative image and cause undue losses.

"The country suffered a loss by only recovering US1.8 billion (RM8.3 billion) compared to the agreed negotiations of US$7 billion (RM32.6 billion) between the Najib administration and IPIC," he said.

He also said that Umno Youth always respects the rule of law and existing laws of the country to ensure that truth and justice are always upheld.

"Umno Youth will not tolerate and will strongly oppose any attempt by any party that wants to abuse the law for personal gain," he said.
