Pahang cops to deploy more than 600 personnel in Pelangai by-election

KUANTAN: Pahang police have held a series of training sessions for its officers and personnel who will be on duty to ensure public safety throughout the Pelangai state seat by-election in Bentong.

State police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said more than 600 policemen will be on duty starting from nomination day, during the campaign period, early voting and through to polling day.

"The training was to ensure the department's preparedness in ensuring public safety during the polls. Based on the 15th general election last year, there were no racial harmony or public order issues reported in the constituency.

"Police have completed the training sessions and we will open our operation centre in Pelangai two days before nomination day. Those on duty would remain there until after polling day," he told reporters after attending the Pahang police monthly gathering at the police contingent headquarters here today.

Meanwhile, Yahaya reminded all quarters to steer clear of 3R issues (race, religion and royalty) during the campaign and stressed that his men will be continuously monitoring during the campaign.

"All candidates should adhere to the law and apply for permits if they plan to hold ceramah during the campaign...this is to ensure the programmes progress smoothly," he said.

On early voting day, Yahaya said 36 policemen will cast their votes at the Manchis police station on Oct 3.

The Pelangai state seat fell vacant following the death of its first-term assemblyman, Datuk Seri Johari Harun, in an aircraft crash in Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam, on Aug 17.

In the 15th general election, Johari won the Pelangai state seat in a four-cornered battle. He won by a 4,048 majority after securing 7,308 votes.

Perikatan Nasional's Kasim Samat garnered 3,260 votes, Ahmed Wafiuddin Shamsuri of Pakatan Harapan (2,031 votes) and Isa Ahmad of Pejuang (65 votes).

The Pelangai by-election nomination will be held on Sept 23 and Oct 7 is polling day.
