Pas Kangar chief claims trial to insulting authority of Perlis ruler

KANGAR: Kangar Pas division chief Yussaine Yahya today claimed trial at the Lower Syariah Court to a charge of insulting the authority of the Raja of Perlis and the state Islamic agency by organising a religious event without authority in March.

Yussaine, 43, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Syariah Court Judge Mohamad Zaidi Abdullah.

According to the charge, the accused, who is also the principal of a tahfiz school in Kangar was alleged to have organised a religious event by inviting freelance preacher Mohamad Wadi Anuar Ayub.

He is alleged to have organised the 'Solat Terawih and Sembang Santai' without obtaining approval by the Perlis Mufti Office in accordance with Section 118 of the Islamic Religious Administration Enactment 2006.

The action has also went against the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail's Official Decree regarding compliance to the Perlis State Islamic Religious Policy and Regulations.

The accused is alleged to have committed the offence between 8.30pm and 10.30pm at Maahad Tahfiz al-Quran Al Imam An Nawawi  in Kampung Abi Padang Machang, Kangar on Mar 30.

The charge was filed under Section 38 of the Syarie Criminal Enanctment 1991 for insulting the authority of the Raja of Perlis as the head of state and the state Islamic agencies.

State Syarie Prosecution chief Siti Fatimah Ahmad Maulana prosecuted the case while lawyers Siti Hajar Ahmad and Nur Iman Nor Azmi represented the accused.

Siti Fatimah proposed the court to impose a RM2,500 bail with two sureties.

The defense lawyers objected and pleaded for a lower bail amount.

The court subsequently fixed the bail amount at RM2,000 with two sureties and set Jan 18 next year for mention. Yussaine subsequently posted the bail.

Earlier, some 50 supporters gathered at the court building since 8am to lend their support to Yusssaine but the situation was under control with the presence of policemen.

It was reported that the Perlis State Islamic Religious Affairs Department has summoned Wani Annuar and organiser Pas Kangar's preaching and recruitment committee to have their statements recorded.

The investigation was opened following a report lodged by the department at the Kangar police station after its enforcement officers were barred from approaching Wadi Annuar to record his statement over the event.
