Kuala Terengganu MP slams PH man for calling him corrupt

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Terengganu member of parliament Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim today lashed out at a government backbencher for saying he was involved in corrupt practices yesterday.

Citing Standing Order 36(6), which states that no member of the House shall impute improper motives to any other member, Amzad demanded that Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) withdraw his statement.

This comes after Sany had said yesterday that Perikatan Nasional had fielded the same candidate for the Kuala Terengganu by-election — Amzad — despite the Election Court ruling that his win in the 15th General Election was due to "corrupt practices".

"Hulu Langat said that the court decided there was an issue, consequently leading to the cancellation of the Kuala Terengganu candidate's win. He then said PN had re-fielded the candidate who practices corruption and bribery.

"This was far off from the court's judgment... it did not convict me of corruption and also did not mention any parties' names.

"(Sany's) action has insulted the court and me as the people's representative. Hence, I urge that (Sany) withdraw the statement," said Amzad.

Following this, Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor suggested that Amzad file a motion in line with Articles 17, 18 or 36 of the House.

"There is a proper way (to address) what was raised and I suggest that you file a motion under Articles 17, 18 and 36.

"File the motion for the matter to be raised (and discussed in the House)," he said.

In GE15 in November, Amzad won the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat with a majority of 40,907 votes.

However, the Election Court annulled the results, finding that there could be elements of corruption during the campaign period. A by-election was ordered to be held.

This was held on Aug 12, simultaneously with state elections in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kelantan.

Amzad again emerged victorious in the fight for the constiuency.
